Height: 31cm | Width: 24cm

This is a seated figure of the Buddha, expertly carved from a single piece of wood. He is seated in a cross-legged position. His right hand is raised to chest height with the thumb and index finger touching to form a circle, a gesture known as the Vitarka Mudra, which signifies the discussion and transmission of the Dharma. His left hand is resting in his lap, palm facing up. He is wearing a simple monastic robe that drapes over his left shoulder, with minimal folds, revealing the form beneath.

The face of the Buddha has a calm, peaceful expression with gently closed eyes, conveying a state of deep inner reflection. His hair is composed of small, tightly-coiled curls, rising to a prominent, pointed finial (Rasmi) on top of the Ushnisha, symbolizing his high level of spiritual development and enlightenment.

The Vitarka Mudra is the gesture of teaching and intellectual discussion. It symbolizes the transmission of the Buddha's wisdom and teachings after his enlightenment. The style, particularly the graceful proportions and the shape of the finial, is characteristic of Lao or Thai Buddhist art.

The wood has a rich, warm tone with a beautiful, visible grain, and its smooth finish highlights the graceful curves of the carving. This elegant and spiritually significant piece is a beautiful representation of wisdom and teaching, bringing a sense of serenity to any space.
