Khmer Bronze Buddha Muchalinda
$999.00
Height: 41cm | Width: 17cm
This is a bronze statue of the seated Buddha on a Naga base. The Buddha is seated in the full lotus position (Padmasana) on a pedestal formed by the coiled body of a mythical multi-headed serpent, the Naga. His hands are resting in his lap, one on top of the other with palms facing up, forming the Dhyana Mudra, the gesture of meditation and concentration. He wears a simple monastic robe that is smoothly rendered on his body.
The face of the Buddha has a calm, peaceful expression with gently closed eyes, conveying a state of deep contemplation. Behind his head, the seven-headed hood of the Naga flares out, creating a protective canopy or halo.
This iconography represents the story of the Buddha Muchalinda. According to the legend, as the Buddha meditated, a great storm arose. The Naga king Muchalinda emerged from the water and coiled his body under the Buddha to raise him above the flood, while using his hood to shield him from the rain. This statue is a powerful symbol of divine protection and steadfastness in the face of adversity. The style, particularly the robust proportions and the prominence of the Naga, is a hallmark of the Khmer Empire.
The surface of the bronze has a dark, rich patina with areas of subtle verdigris, which highlights the intricate details of the figure and the Naga. This unique and spiritually profound piece is a beautiful example of Khmer religious art, bringing a sense of protection and tranquility to any collection.
